ATTIC LIGHTING
Attic lighting will be dictated by the use of the room. In many modern Irish homes, the attic converts into a living area. In some cases, it morphs into one or two bedrooms, a kids den, a games room, or a home office, depending on the size of the space available.
If building from new and you are not sure what you are going to do with the attic space in the future, make sure you provide for all options when wiring it for power and light at the outset.
An attic may lie dormant for years, being used only to dump the Christmas decorations and other accumulated junk. However, as the kids grow up it may be converted to any one of the uses mentioned above.
Final finish to lighting will only happen after conversion. If working to existing dimensions, you may find that lack of headroom prevents installation of ceiling lights. Even if space permits, fit fluorescent tubes to the ceiling as they only take up about four inches of space and provide very effective floodlighting.
Stand-alone lamps will generally do the job in such an area for the balance of lighting requirements.
Placing a snooker or pool table in the attic will require specialist drop-down canopy lighting designed specifically for that purpose. Similarly, some like a darts or ring board will need a spotlight.
