Attic Insulation Thermal Response Heat Retention Window Insulation
If your house is a two-storey house with decent pitch, you will have attic or a functioning attic room. Heat from the floor below will rise and help heat that area. However, this is not the ideal solution as you are losing heat from the lower rooms.
Many people say that it is okay to let heat upstairs through a poorly insulated ceiling because it leaves bedrooms warm for when you use. That misses the point that they are also warm when you don’t use them. You may heat your ground floor in the winter when the kids come in from school or you come home from work. It could be another six to seven hours before you use these rooms in the attic.
You are being penny wise- pound-foolish in this regard. Your living area is losing heat when it needs it most and your attic area is getting it when it needs it least.
Ensure that the floor of the attic and thereby the ceiling of your living area is fully insulated
Insulation of roof space is critical in an attic as this is the shallowest exterior of the house and heat will pour out if not properly insulated.
If you have a modern dormer bungalow, you may have a pre-cast concrete first floor. This keeps heat downstairs very effectively as you have a 9” base plus a 3” screed on top of it. Zoned heating via whatever system you have in the rest of the house is effective in the attic living area in this situation where you can control the amount of heat being directed to a particular area..
Put heavy blinds on the Velux windows in an attic room to prevent heat loss at night.
